Stop Wasting Time — Get Over Your Fear

I talk a lot about fear and just getting out there and starting. But that doesn’t mean I’m always good at it myself.

Andy Traub had posted his list of things he does instead of actually writing a blog post. I can relate, and I’m sure you can too!

The underlining issue for me is fear. I have so many things I want to share with you all, but fear holds me back. My million dollar idea — what if you hate it? What if I post my best and then someone later tells me someone else said it before me and they said it better? What if I misspell a word? What if I write an awkward sentence? What if no one likes what I have to say? What if…?

So, I too have a lengthy list of things I do instead of actually writing for you, but I’ll limit myself to the top 10 time-wasters!

Beware of Mindless Time Wasters!

  1. Check Facebook.
  2. Browse Pinterest.
  3. Read.
  4. Email, I’m always checking email.
  5. Go check on how my hubby and kids are doing, this one is so easy to do especially when I hear them laughing and having a good time during the day!
  6. Make a phone call — it’s amazing how I just have to call so-and-so right now when I’m supposed to be busy doing something else.
  7. Mindlessly pick up my phone and start pressing buttons, scrolling through anything and everything.
  8. Check my email, again!
  9. Organize my desk.
  10. Start a new list, a girl’s gotta stay organized!

But starting today, I am going to stop being afraid. I will no longer let my fear stop me from writing about my great ideas, if you don’t like them, oh well (although I cringe at the thought!).

Fear Eliminates the Possibility of Success

The last time I was criticized, I almost took down my “great post” on Facebook because I hated the thought that someone didn’t think it was such a great idea. Guess what, I didn’t. And I’m so thankful. That post ended up helping several other people in a big way.

So, if this post doesn’t help you, that’s ok. Move on. I know that it will help someone out there.

And hey, maybe we should listen to what our mothers taught us about not saying anything at all if we don’t have something nice constructive to say.

Overcome Your Obstacles and Succeed

A beginner’s guide to overcoming your worst obstacle—you!

I was just reading The 4 Types Of People Who Never Succeed In Business by Dale Partridge. Instead of showcasing successful professionals, he thought it would be a great idea to show us all who fails in business. And since successful professionals come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no cookie-cutter model for success, I thought this was a splendid look at what not to do.

I am going to show you how to overcome these 4 terrible traits so that you can succeed.

The Four Types of Failures

  • The Unfinisher
  • The Selfish Partner
  • The Executive Liar
  • The Fearful Entrepreneur

I’m sure I don’t have to explain what each of these bad trait look like. I’m even sure a few people ran through your mind as you read through them!

But I also know that everyone of us has been one, or more, of these people at one point or another—and these are all traits we can overcome, because obviously nobody sets out to be a jerk.

How to Overcome Your Terrible Self

The Unfinisher

I urge you to pick one project that is just sitting there unfinished and tackle it now. If you absolutely cannot do anything to work on it right now, put it on your calendar and make a commitment to yourself. While you’re at it, call up a friend to hold you accountable.

The Selfish Partner

Don’t think about it, stop right now and write down five things you can do to bless those around you. Throughout your day,  before you dish out another order, stop and think about why and how what you’re doing and saying is affecting others. Everyday this week, do one of those five things you wrote down to bless those around you.

The Executive Liar

This is a hard one and it’s not going to be easy to overcome, but with a little bit of effort each day you will gradually show those around you that you’re working toward better relationships and honesty. If you are a liar, surprise, everyone already knows it! What is something you’ve lied about recently? It’s time to rectify the situation. Call up a friend or a co-worker, sit down with your spouse and say, “I’m sorry.” Talk it out.

Another thing to do this week is to think before you speak. Before you open your mouth, run it through a filter—is this complete truth? If not, try again.

The Fearful Entrepreneur

I would venture to say most of you fall into this category, we all have something to fear. Whether it’s a fear of failure, or of the unknown, or of financial security, starting your own business can be a very scary thing. The only way to fix it is to get out there and do something. Find an accountability partner and make it happen. Stop talking. Stop dreaming. And start doing! But go ahead and take baby steps, it will get easier.
